My sons eardrum burst?

2 days ago my 2 and a half yr old son kept holding his right ear and was sookie all day and the following night. the next morning i notice his ear was leaking blood a lot as soon as i wiped it away more would come. so i took him straight down to emergency to get him checked and the doc said that because his been sick the fluids built up and then his eardrum has burst but its hard to see because of how much Fluid. they said he would be ok and it would heal on its own. but now im confused because i was fine with what the doc said but now my mum said it wot heal on its own and he'll need further assistance because she said that it happened to 2 of my sisters when they where young ad they both needed surgery to fix it. can everyone be different, im worried my son will need surgery now. anyone else have a problem like mine or similar? his been such a brave and strong boy so far, i'd hate to put him through something so Intense.
